Interchange Plus or Interchange Pass-Through pricing is the practice of passing through to the merchant the exact fees that the credit card associations charge to accept credit cards plus adding on a specific fixed transaction charge by the merchant processor. This allows for transparency in credit card fee pricing. The more common practice of "rates" actually masks the fees that merchant processors charge and allows for excessive markups for "downgraded" transactions. Those "buckets" of Qualified, Mid-Qualified and Non-Qualified mask the underlying cost to take credit cards. Interchange does away with those buckets and exposes the exact costs to process credit cards.

What affects credit card rates?
What affects the rate a merchant pays for a credit card?
Factors that determine your rates include:
1) The industry your business is engaged in.
2) The general level risk for that type of business
3) The business's/industry's history of chargebacks
4) The individual businesses processing history
5) The business's and the owner' credit history
6) The time to deliver of the goods
7) The type of card accepted (debit, simple credit, rewards credit, corporate credit, etc.)
8) The way the card is accepted (swipped, keyed present, keyed not present, etc.)
There are other items to consider, but these are the main factors.

Non-PCI Compliance Fees
Non-PCI Compliance Fees are sometimes charged on a monthly statement because a merchant has not completed a security compliance form or somehow certified that they are following industry standard security procedures for handling credit card information. These fees can be easily avoided by following the merchant processor's procedures for certifying the business and their procedures as following all credit card security procedures. Maxx Merchants, as a leading merchant processor, provides an easy to use web site to complete this certification and help merchants avoid these unnecessary charges.
